Bilberry Bonanza

Moor than meets the eye, a Heritage Lottery Funded Dartmoor Landscape Partnership Scheme, began its 2016 programme of summer events last Thursday with the brilliant Bilberry Bonanza. The adventure, hosted at Yarner Woods: East Dartmoor National Nature Reserve, saw participants judge a wide variety of bilberry based delicious cakes and treats baked by the Moor than meets the eye team all competing for the coveted ‘Great Bilberry Bake Off’ trophy. After hunting through the woods for their own bilberries, families used the juice from the bilberries found to write and decode secret messages as well as taking part in a whole host of other fun and games. Bake off Entries (Photo: Lucy Alford) Moor than meets the eye’s events officer, Andy Bailey commented on the events success saying “The Bilberry Bonanza and Bake Off was a great chance to have some fun in the woods and celebrate the wonderful Dartmoor woodland we have right on our doorsteps. The bonanza marked the start of a summer of wildlife events which we hope will inspire families to get out and explore the nature reserves and national parks in Devon.” The coming months will include chances to get involved with Wildlife Wednesday’s with our resident community ecologist and we've teamed up with other wildlife organisations to run the Big Wildlife Picnic at Parke, Bovey Tracey on Tuesday 16th August as well as a Wildlife Festival at Meldon Quarry, Tuesday 23rd August.
