Timber! Tools, Trees and Tall Tales - Saturday 24 March

If you want to know what woodland conservation is all about, the Timber! Tools, Trees and Tall Tales event is for you. Hosted by the Woodland Trust and Natural England at Pullabrook Woods in the Bovey Valley the woodland open day will show you why we fell trees, what happens to the timber and how we manage the precious woodland habitats for some of our special wild species.[gallery ids="12587,12586" type="rectangular"]This event will celebrate the use of both traditional wood skills and modern day machinery. As well as a tree felling demonstration you can see how the large saw logs are extracted from the woods by horse power and how a mobile timber mill converts the logs into wooden boards and beams. This is real woodland conservation in action![gallery ids="12576,12590,12585" type="rectangular"]In the beautiful riverside meadow, you will be able to have a go at some traditional woodcrafts, build a bird box and, sitting round the camp fire, make some artists’ charcoal and listen to woodland tales. If you are feeling arty, you can make a clay model of a sleepy dormouse while learning about how we look after the woods to protect these precious small mammals.[gallery ids="12581,12591" type="rectangular"]

Timber! Tools, Trees and Tall Tales event takes place at Pullabrook Woods near Bovey Tracey on Saturday 24th March 2018 and you are welcome to drop in anytime from 11am to 4pm, or you can stay all day.Don’t forget to bring a packed lunch and wear outdoor clothing, suitable for spring time weather on Dartmoor.  Dogs are welcome but need to be kept on a lead, as we will have horses and machinery on site.For all the details and to book tickets please follow this link to the Events page on the Woodland Trust website. Tickets cost £2 per adult/child.-------------------------------------------------Directions: Pullabrook Wood is just outside of Bovey Tracey near to the village of Lustleigh. By car: From the A38, follow signs to Bovey Tracey on the A382. Take the second exit at the first roundabout, staying on the A382, then at the next roundabout take the first exit onto the B3387 towards Haytor. Keep to the right where the road forks (signposted East Dartmoor) and continue to a brown road sign on the right to Bovey Valley Woods. Take this right turning and continue along this road. Parking will be in a field on your right and will be signposted.(If using Sat Nav follow you can use TQ13 9SR to take you close to the site, then follow event signage).
