A Living Tradition: Heavy Horses in Action
On Thursday the 30th of March the heavy horses, Beano and William, along with their handlers brothers Will and Alex, returned to Fingle Woods. The horses will be extracting timber, felled over the winter, to help improve habitat in an area being surveyed for Marsh Tits, a woodland species which is in severe decline. They will be here until this Thursday (the 6th of April). To meet the horses and see the work in progress just follow the riverside track from Fingle Bridge heading east towards Clifford Bridge and stop by for a chat.To learn more about working with the heavy horses and why we choose to use them as part of our ancient woodland restoration watch this beautiful video by Mike Greenwood and Grant Wakefield. Also watch this space for an upcoming blog about the bird surveying and how our management of the habitats is helping to make them more bird friendly.Horse loggers: ancient woodland restoration from Fingle Woods on Vimeo.
