Fingle Lectures: September and October

Join us for another season of walks and talks.

After a short summer break we’re continuing our series of lectures about Fingle’s fascinating wildlife, history and restoration. Below is a little taster of the next two talks, so you can pop the dates in your diary. The first talk of the Autumn is on Thursday the 6th of September in Halls Cleave, we hope to see you there! 

Goodbye giant conifers hello wetland…maybe?

6th September, Halls Cleave, 7pm

David Rickwood, Project Manager at Fingle, will lead a short walk in Halls Cleave to look at the proposed plan to fell an area of large conifer this winter. This is part of a longer term project to create a series of small wetlands, an uncommon habitat in Fingle Woods.Meet in Halls Cleave Wood at 7pm, the easiest access is from Clifford Bridge, the parking will be sign posted from there. 

Fingle Mill Dig 2018: Grist Mills & Afternoon Tea

4th October, Fingle Bridge Inn, 7pm

The community excavation that was undertaken in July exposed the floors, wheel pit and cog pit of the mill for the first time since its destruction 125 years ago. The archaeological evidence would suggest the mill had been raided for salvageable materials following the fire (mill machinery valued at £50 in 1893), but that a surprising amount survived, including a significant deposit of burnt grain. This talk will present the preliminary findings of the post-excavation analyses, and highlight the potential of the site for further work.
